Women's Intercultural Peformance Training in Bali
A 6 month journey in performance and presence, starting with a 5 day retreat....
18th-22nd June 2027
Led by Dr Ellie Chadwick (PhD) and Karma Tucker, experienced lecturers and performance practitioners, this retreat and mentorship programme offers a unique opportunity to explore Balinese performance traditions, intercultural training, and embodied storytelling within a holistic framework that integrates somatic and nervous system-informed practice.
This is more than a retreat. It is a research-informed performance laboratory: a space to experiment with intercultural embodiment, voice, mythology and identity. Through workshops, storytelling labs, Balinese ritual arts and Somatic Mythwork™, you’ll explore new ways of creating, performing and being—expanding your artistic practice alongside your creative confidence, cultural understanding and embodied presence.
Why Join?
This immersive experience is designed for performing arts students, actors, researchers, and creatives who wish to deepen their artistic practice, expand their creative confidence and explore personal transformation through ritual arts, cross-cultural performance training and embodied practice.
Developed by Dr Ellie Chadwick following over fifteen years of international performance direction, intercultural theatre practice and academic research, The Performer’s Path draws upon contemporary performance training alongside ritual arts, mythology and embodied creative practice.
Through a blend of Balinese and Western techniques, and Ellie’s signature Somatic Mythwork™ technique, you’ll expand your expressive range, deepen your connection to the body and voice, and cultivate confidence and stage presence – both as an artist and as a human being. Performance as Transformation
Developed by Dr Ellie Chadwick (PhD)—researcher, lecturer, theatre-maker and specialist in intercultural performance, mythology and embodied storytelling—The Performer’s Path is an application of Wanderess’ unique Somatic Mythwork™ methodology to creative and performance practice.
At Wanderess, we understand performance as far more than entertainment. Across cultures and throughout history, theatre, ritual, storytelling and dance have helped communities explore identity, navigate transition, make meaning and imagine new ways of being.
This programme invites performers, researchers and creatives to explore performance as both an artistic discipline and a transformative creative practice. Bringing together Balinese performance traditions, contemporary theatre training, archetypal psychology, expressive arts and trauma-informed embodied practice, you’ll investigate how body, voice, imagination and story come together to create presence, meaning and authentic expression.
Rather than asking simply, “How do I perform?”, we ask different questions: Who am I becoming when I step into this role? How does my performance bring me into closer contact with my deeper self, and the collective whole? How does the act of performance become a ritual of transformation, healing, growth?
Archetypal Performance
Every Wanderess experience is rooted in archetypal exploration.
At the heart of The Performer’s Path is The Actress—an archetype of presence, emotional truth, creative courage and self-possession. Rather than viewing performance as something we do only on stage, we explore how every role we inhabit shapes the way we move through the world.
Alongside The Actress, we’ll work with a constellation of archetypal figures as symbolic pathways into different modes of creativity, expression and identity, such as:
- Maa Saraswati — the Balinese goddess of knowledge, creativity and the arts, offering a framework for understanding performance as both a spiritual and artistic practice.
- The Diva — exploring visibility, confidence and emotional expression, and how cultural expectations shape women’s relationship with taking up space.
- The Wallflower — embodying observation, quiet presence, sensitivity and the power of subtle expression.
- The Heroine, The Enchantress, The Rebeless and The Authoress — each offering a unique archetypal pathway into creativity, identity and transformation through mythology, storytelling and embodied practice.
Through movement, voice, writing, ritual, theatre, imagination and intercultural performance, these archetypes become lived experiences rather than abstract ideas—expanding not only your artistic practice, but your relationship with yourself as a creative human being.
